Urban City (Analogous)
Seascape (Complementary)

For this project we learned different kinds of color schemes and in the project we were tasked to make a landscape that uses the different schemes. Up above in my project I used the analogous color scheme for an urban city, the complementary color scheme for a seascape, the triadic scheme for an arid dessert, and lastly the split-complementary scheme for the outer space landscape. During this project I learned how to create different images just from the foundations of basic shapes. I also learned how to take images on figma and curve the lines in order to make more detailed images. What I found was easy was layering each image in order to create a dynamic scene for each frame. There were a few challenging things about this project. One mainly was time management, since I knew that I was going to be using simple shapes I underestimated how long each frame would take for me. Another challenging element to this project was making sure I was able to show the different color schemes. There were moments where I had to stop in order to think of whether or not the frame was showing the scheme I was going for. So in those moments I would take a moment for myself and try to rethink how to do the landscape in a better way. For example for the Arid Dessert I was complete with the sand and was gonna go for an analogous theme but then I had to pause and remember that I had used that theme. So in order to fix the problem I came up the idea to have cacti with flowers in order to bring more colors for a triadic theme between the colors orange, green, and purple. If I were to continue working on this project I would rearrange the buildings of my urban city so there are more contrasts with the shape and so the image itself doesn’t feel congested, same goes with the dessert scene. This assignment was pretty good for students to explore different color options and how to use them for contrast and I feel as though there is no need to change the assignment. Working on this project made me realize I need to change up my color palette a little more and with that it will help me bring contrast into my work and give my work more of a ‘popping’ effect.

DMA217 Project 1: Using Figma to Build a TODO App ../2022/09/27/dma217-project-1-using-figma-to-build-a-todo-app/ Tue, 27 Sep 2022 18:08:20 +0000 https://comdma.com/caitlenet/?p=38 In this project I learned what goes behind trying to piece together an app. I found that there are a lot of paths that have to be created by someone in order to get an app to work. Some thing that I found easy was connecting all the pieces together. When you have a vision in mind it is easy to work around that vision. For instance while I was creating how the editing of each task should go I kept a general image in my head of how the app was going to play out and worked with it to achieve my goal. Something challenging was making sure that the app looked well organized and could actually aid in someone’s life. I found this part difficult because my head wants things to be perfect or at least look well done. Sometimes I would get frustrated that the app looked too plain or looked too complicated. But in the end I was able to find myself close to the middle. I could improve my app by adding in more details and maybe laying around with the fonts and placement a little more. For the next class I believe you can get the students on working with a logo first and then engaging with building the app. I feel like if they were made to start off with a logo they can build up an app design that’s cohesive to the logo. With this project I will take away with the knowledge of working out of the box more often. Instead of doing a cookie cutter approach to my other projects I wanna try to take a spin with creativity and build up with the foundation of the project that is given.

DMA 214A Project 1: Nursery Rhymes ../2022/09/20/dma-214a-project-1-nursery-rhymes/ Tue, 20 Sep 2022 20:31:35 +0000 https://comdma.com/caitlenet/?p=8

Reflection

  1. What did you learn?
  2. What was easy?
  3. What was challenging?
  4. How could your submission be improved?
  5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?
  6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
  7. How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

In this project I learned how to navigate the website figma. I was able to create complex shapes by using simple ones that they had at hand. With this project I was able to think outside the box on how to connect objects to make a cohesive image.

Once I had an idea in mind, creating the images were pretty easy. In my head I am able to take images nd break them down into simple shapes, so creating images out of shapes wasn’t a problem to me.

What was challenging was creating ideas for each line of poetry. I chose the nursery rhyme, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and some lines used more out-of-the-box thinking than others. For instance, the line, “Yes sir, Yes sir,” contains no imagery at the base of it. So for me I had to think of symbols that can represent those words and by using that method I was able to overcome my challenges.

My submission could include more symbolism. In this project my designs have more of a story board aspect and I feel like I can play around with simplicity more. If I kept it more simple, my designs can pop out more than it does now. Also what I can improve on is integrating more principles of gesalt. I feel as though I can make more of the images as stand out or create different grids that show different principles.

For the next class Professor Dunkle should allow the students to explore more how to use symbolism with simple shapes. I feel as though it is easy to create images but if you make the rules to not allow the students to create images such as people or places, there could be more creativity when it comes to this project.

With the knowledge I learned from this project I will be able to simplify words or ideas into shapes. When making or integrating a logo into a different projects I will try to use the principles of gesalt to make it stand out.

The reading from smashing magazine helped me understand fully what each principle is and how to properly use them. This reading helped me make sure the eye was catching the focal point that is intended to stand out.
