This project introduced me to video prototyping on Figma. Up to this point, I had only ever done work with still images (on the To Do app and Web Development project). Prototyping videos was a whole different ball game. For example, I learned how to start and pause a playing video.

What was easy? Coming up with the idea was fairly simple, as well as the designing portion of the application.

What was challenging? I had a difficult time prototyping this project. It was just very difficult to follow at the front of the class, so I had to schedule a few meetings with Professor Dunkle to get me back on track. I ended up realizing that the biggest reason my Prototypes were failing was because I was not putting things in frames.

How could your submission be improved? I feel like the prototyping is a bit clunky. For example, for my back button, I was unable to make it go “on tap.” It would only let me do it “on drag.” I am sure there is a way to fix it, but I was unsure of what to do. If I had a bigger skillset, I could definitely make the application way bigger and more complex.

How could I improve the assignment for the next class? There is a lot I could do to make this better. If I had more time, I could’ve done more than two translation prototypes. This class as a whole was not my strong suit, and theres a lot I could learn on Figma to make me a better user.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? Even though I do not see myself heading down a web design path in the future, the skills I learned will make me a very well-rounded candidate for a job in (hopefully) digital marketing in the future. My graphic design background makes me more marketable than other MarCom people.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you? What really inspired this assignment was my trip to Italy I took over spring break with my Travel Photography course. Luckily, our tour guide did most of the translating for us, but it got me thinking; What would I do if I went to a foreign country by myself without a translator? The language barrier was a real thing. That was what inspired me to create TranslateLive, an Augmented Reality translator.

My components, fonts, and color scheme.

Layout of my app before adding any prototyping or flows

After doing some prototype work on my video where I translate text.

My app as of April 30th. Did some adjusting (like making the video screen bigger) and fixed my landing page. I also fixed my button and gave it a hover state.

Prototyping toward the end of my assignment on May 7th. This day, I created the video translation. I also added a home button and next/back button so the app is interconnected.

Project 2: Web Development ../../../2024/03/19/project-2-web-development/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 14:35:07 +0000 https://comdma.com/ashers/?p=47 Continue reading Project 2: Web Development]]>

What did you learn? This assignment taught me how to mockup a website on Figma. It also showed me how to create a website by coding, using Visual Studio Code. We used CSS and html.

What was easy? The easiest part of this assignment was the designing portion on Figma. I was already familiar on how to use the app from our previous assignment for the To Do App. I was able to use my prior knowledge to create things on the website. For example, using iconify, creating components, and making buttons.

What was challenging? The coding aspect of this project was definitely the most difficult. Luckily, I am taking Intro to Web Computing so I have some knowledge, but coding is really a whole new world to me this semester. I couldn’t get everything on the code mockup to match what the Figma app looked like. I still have a lot to learn and parts of the site to fix.

How could your submission be improved? I find my website to be a bit bland. If I had a larger skill set, it would look completely different. I have also been in a bit of a rut when it comes to school and I have been facing major burnout. I think if I had more motivation I would have a more interesting site and more details in the coding.

How could I improve the assignment for the next class? I need to do more coding to make the website look better. There is so much I can add to the coding to make my site look more appealing and aesthetic. Right now, I only have a basic looking website. I need to fix the links to the other web pages on the coding version of my site.

I can also use what I learned from VS Code in my Intro to Web Computing class this semester.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you? The website W3 Schools helped me with coding. When I imported my photo on the home page, it ended up being way too big. I remembered learning how to change photo size in my other class, so I went on to W3 Schools as a reminder of how to change image size. I did this by adding “width:400” to the line of code.

Project 1: To Do App ../../../2024/02/13/lab-2-logo-and-icon-design/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 15:11:47 +0000 https://comdma.com/ashers/?p=12 Continue reading Project 1: To Do App]]> What Did I learn? This “To Do” App was definitely a learning experience for me. I had only used Figma once before this assignment during my freshman year, but this project was a lot more complex. Something in particular I learned that I found useful is the ability to create components. Creating components made it so much easier to replicate a button, checkbox, etc. that I needed again. One more thing I learned was the concept of plugins. Plugins made it very easy to add icons or any additional features to your app that Figma doesn’t offer itself.

What was easy? In my opinion, this project was difficult to do on my own. Asking Professor Dunkle for help over zoom aided me with a great deal of this assignment. I consider myself a slow learner when it comes to learning new programs.

What was challenging? There were multiple challenging aspects of this project, but one thing I really struggled with was the navigation tab. It took me multiple attempts to get it to work the way I wanted. It took a big chunk of my zoom session with Professor Dunkle to get it working correctly.

How could my submission be improved? Now that my To Do app is complete, I feel there is nothing “wrong” with it per se, but I feel it is not very aesthetically appealing or creatively designed. It is a bit too simple looking in my opinion.

How could I improve my assignment for the next class? I believe I could improve my app by taking the time to learn the Figma tool better and possibly watching tutorials on how to use the app. I also could’ve viewed more of Professor Dunkle’s class lectures to figure out things I missed.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? As somebody who wants to pursue social media and social media marketing as a future profession, I feel that Figma may be an extremely useful tool to know. There may be a time in my career where I need to mockup social media posts or app updates on Figma. It is a great tool to help an idea come to life.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you? What inspired the idea for my app was a challenge I was seeing on social media called the “75 Hard.” I thought it would be cool to base my app off of that instead of doing a regular To Do app.

Pictured above are three pages of my app that I am most proud of.

Work In Progress Images:

This screenshot was taken after about a week of working on the To-Do App. At this point, I was not feeling overwhelmed with the prototyping and the amount of pages. I only had a few button prototypes completed

Here is the logo I created. I think it is sleek and professional. I like how the text goes through the number “75.” It was recommended that I take out the “on task” banner from the 16×16 logo due to its size.

Here is a photo of my project about three-quarters done. As I needed more pages and prototypes, the assignment got more complex.

Here is my Figma Assignment fully complete. I was finally satisfied with the way everything was functioning.

Lastly, here is the color palette I made for my app. I created three different color styles for easy access. I named the colors (L to R) Navy Blue, Steel Blue, and Light Gray.
