Reflection:

  • What did you learn?
    • I learned that when it comes to designing packaging that there are two ways to show how it will look on a product. The first way is by printing it out and putting it on the item, and the other way is by making a 3D version in illustrator.
  • What was easy?
    • It was easy deciding my color scheme and what designs I wanted to do with my product. I wanted the designs to be colorful and eye-catching since these were paired with cupcakes.
  • What was challenging?
    • It was challenging cutting out the liner because the reference lines were too light compared to the dark colors of my palette.
  • How could your submission be improved?
    • My submission could be improved if I figured out how to add a bottom to the liner so the cupcake would sit in it.
  • How can the professor improve the assignment in the future?
    • I don’t think anything needs to be improved on the professor’s end.
  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
    • I’ll apply my knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios if I’m designing a package of some sort I’ll have multiple ways to show the client the result and will be able to make a mock show booth display on how they can present the product.
  • How did a specific reading, video, or example inspire or help you?
    • I guess an example that helped me was the apotec bay booth design for when I created my trade booth. Another inspiration for this project was can koozie’s but I wanted to make them for cupcakes.

Project 2: Merch ../2022/04/05/project-2-merch/ Tue, 05 Apr 2022 16:58:00 +0000 https://comdma.com/barracoc/?p=210 Pictures:

Reflection:

  • What did you learn?
    • I learned about the brainstorming process that goes into creating merch and how one concept can branch off into several different directions. This was very apparent when we talked with Brian Grunert and how he worked on a project that ended up generating over 10 ideas just on boxes.
  • What was easy?
    • It was easy choosing what type of merch I wanted to make. My experience with merch is all clothing, so I knew I wanted one of my pieces to be a shirt.
  • What was challenging?
    • It was challenging figuring out four different designs for the stickers that had a similar theme so they looked like they came in a pack like you would get from actual merch.
  • How could your submission be improved?
    • I think my submission could be improved with the printing of the stickers. The cut of the stickers isn’t centered, and I would have liked for them to be more saturated in color. I also think my t-shirt could have been improved in the printing process, with both of the “s” in “sweet and sour” showing up better.
  • How can the professor improve the assignment in the future?
    • I don’t think anything needs to be improved on the professors end.
  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
    • I’ll apply my knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios if I need to screenprint. I now know the process of setting up a screen, getting your design printed onto it, etc., and would be able to apply those skills in a future scenario.
  • How did a specific reading, video, or example inspire or help you?
    • A big inspiration for my shirt was looking at band ts. I wanted to make it simple but also vintage in how the print was done. For my stickers, I was inspired by my family and nature. I wanted each sticker to focus on one individual along with a specific scenery that best fit them.

Old Menu Designs:

Reflection:

  • What did you learn?
    • I learned how to properly use paragraph and character styles, how to embed links so you don’t lose your photos, and overall got a better understanding of InDesign.
  • What was easy?
    • It was easy figuring out how I wanted my menu to be formatted. There were many directions I could have gone, but I decided early on that I liked the bigger panels since it allowed me to be more organized with my menu items.
  • What was challenging?
    • It was challenging figuring out how to get all the measurements correct for things to fold properly and for the content on the back and inside to have consistency without breaking the styles.
  • How could your submission be improved?
    • I spent a lot of time working on both my menu and table tent, so I don’t think anything can be improved upon at this moment.
  • How can the professor improve the assignment in the future?
    • I don’t believe anything needs to be changed about the assignment for the future.
  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
    • I’ll apply my knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios with all the tools and skills I learned in InDesign that I mentioned in the first question. If I work on anything that contains a lot of content, I will implement linking text boxes and using paragraph and character styles.
  • How did a specific reading, video, or example inspire or help you?
    • An example that inspired me was from a photo that was shown on the introduction day of the assignment. The photo was of a menu, and the front of it opened like mine, with the words on the front being split in half by the opening. This is what inspired me to do the split approach with the front of my menu.

Project 4: Book Theme ../2021/12/15/project-4-book-theme/ ../2021/12/15/project-4-book-theme/#respond Wed, 15 Dec 2021 04:35:00 +0000 https://comdma.com/barracoc/?p=188 Reflection
  • What did you learn?
    • I learned how to use InDesign because my experience with InDesign before this project was very little. I also learned different styles formats that go with different types of works. Lastly, I learned how to use paragraph styles which made putting the book together a lot easier.
  • What was easy?
    • It was easy figuring out what fonts and what content I wanted to use to fill the pages. It was also easy figuring out where I wanted the title and author for each piece to go.
  • What was challenging?
    • It was challenging trying to format a lot of information onto one page so that it was practical but also looked good. There was a lot of tweaking being done to the paragraph styles.
  • How could your submission be improved?
    • I feel my submission could be improved if I messed around with color options more, but I was more focused on getting the layout consistent and looking nice.
  • How can the professor improve the assignment in the future?
    • I don’t think anything needs to be improved about the assignment.
  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
    • I might apply this knowledge with future assignments or work scenarios if I need to format something that is going to be printed like a book, magazine, poster, etc. I will be taking print design next semester, so it’s expected I will be expanding on these skills and go into more detail on how everything will look when printed.
  • How did a specific reading, video, or example inspire or help you?
    • I found a website that paired up different types of fonts that go well together, and it inspired the font combo I chose. The link to the website is https://digitalsynopsis.com/design/adobe-font-combinations/ . The quadrangle website helped me a lot when it came to what was going on the last two pages and the back cover. Although all the content in this project was from the quadrangle website when it came to the last three pages, I was confused about what to put for contributor roles; but the website information solved that issue. https://canisiusquadrangle.com/quadrangle-68/

Project 3: Type History Poster ../2021/11/17/project-3-type-history-poster/ ../2021/11/17/project-3-type-history-poster/#respond Wed, 17 Nov 2021 07:04:39 +0000 https://comdma.com/barracoc/?p=182 Finished Product:

Inspiration:

Reflection:

  • What did you learn?

I learned how to format text in InDesign and illustrator in a user-friendly way while still being conscious of the design layout. I also learned how to get rid of hyphens in both adobe programs.

  • What was easy?

It was easy knowing how I wanted to present my information. Once I settled on a font, I knew I wanted to model my design after the old mac screen layout to emphasize the time period and why it was made.

  • What was challenging?

It was challenging picking which font to do my project on. I had a lot of fonts I wanted to work on for the project but couldn’t figure out a solid design for the poster that truly represented the font’s style and purpose.

  • How could your submission be improved?

I feel like my submission could be improved if I could space out the window screens better, so I could have the icons more spread out as it would be on an actual laptop.

  • How can the professor improve the assignment in the future?

I don’t think anything needs to be improved on the professor’s end.

  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

I can apply my knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios with how to make a design go along with the font being used. I could also apply how to properly format content with heavy text so it looks good and is easier to read as a consumer.

  • How did a specific reading, video, or example inspire or help you?

Looking at what old mac screens looked like helped me figure out how to format my design so you can get an idea of when the font was created and what its intended purpose was.

Project 2: Words ../2021/10/19/project-2-words/ ../2021/10/19/project-2-words/#respond Tue, 19 Oct 2021 05:45:18 +0000 https://comdma.com/barracoc/?p=167 Sketches/Rough Drafts:

Final Product:

Reflection:

  • What did you learn?

I learned how to alter letters/words to represent specific meanings based on the movies I did my project on. I also learned how to kern and track my words to get the best look.

  • What was easy?

It was easy figuring out what movies I wanted to base my work on along with the ideas for each movie to represent a specific plot that happened in the movie.

  • What was challenging?

It was challenging at times with the civil war piece trying to give each letter a nice slanting look without ruining the legibility of each letter. It was also challenging working with the infinity war piece with so many components under one layer in illustrator.

  • How could your submission be improved?

I feel as though my submission can be improved if I could get the letters for the civil war piece to have sharper edges since moving the letters caused the straight edges to be wavy.

  • How can the professor improve the assignment in the future?

I don’t think anything needs to be improved on the professor’s end.

  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

I might apply my knowledge in future assignments or work by if I need to make a design/logo I can tie in visual representations to show what the business/brand is working to do.

  • How did a specific reading, video, or example inspire or help you?

The “How We Read” article helped me determine the best way to slice my words for my infinity war piece, so you can still read it. The article talks about how it’s easier to read the top half of letters when cut off and harder to read the bottom half when cut off.

Project 1: Letter ../2021/09/28/project-1-letter/ ../2021/09/28/project-1-letter/#respond Tue, 28 Sep 2021 06:23:09 +0000 https://comdma.com/barracoc/?p=150 My Font:

Process Pics/Sketches:

The picture above was the first font I made, but I wasn’t liking the doubling up on one side, so I scratched this as a font possibility and moved on to the next.

The picture above was the second font I started, but it felt very boring. Overall the letters came out too sharp, and I felt I couldn’t go further since it would be hard to accomplish this with specific letters.

Reflection:

  • What did you learn?

I learned how to tell the difference between the different types of fonts there are. I also learned how to format when it comes to using simple shapes in a smaller work area.

  • What was easy?

It was easy figuring out what type of font I wanted to base mine on.

  • What was challenging?

It was challenging staying within the boundaries I set and sticking with the rules when it came to difficult letters.

  • How could your submission be improved?

My submission could be improved if I gave myself a bigger area to work with so I had room in general along with room to make decisions later on, in the alphabet, so it was easier to adjust the rest of the font if needed.

  • How can the professor improve the assignment in the future?

I don’t think anything needs to be improved.

  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

I’ll apply my knowledge in the future, for let’s say, I’m working for a company, and they want to rebrand but want a unique font. I can create a new font from scratch based on the type classification they like. I could also see this scenario happening with a new company that wants to stand out amongst the competition.

  • How did a specific reading, video, or example inspire or help you?

Thinking with type helped me properly structure my letters and set the cap and x-height to where it can work for every letter. It also helped me figure out which font type I wanted to base mine on since it gave a good description, along with good visuals for each type.

Lab 3: Forest Lawn ../2021/09/23/lab-3-forest-lawn/ ../2021/09/23/lab-3-forest-lawn/#respond Thu, 23 Sep 2021 19:46:52 +0000 https://comdma.com/barracoc/?p=136

This is blackletter font because it has extra decorations, as you can see, especially in the capital L, S, O, A, and K.

This is a slab serif font because the letters are a little thicker but still have the feet at the ends of the letters.

This is a script font because it mimics cursive handwriting. They only did “Our Alice” in cursive, so it seems more personal.

This is a historical font because the use of shapes is apparent, along with the slight changes in the left photo that was made. In “Carpenter,” they chose to do a lower n to keep with the round theme, and they did the same with the y in “Kalway” to get rid of those sharp features those letters give when capitalized.

This font is serif because the feet of the letters are finished off in a more decorative style, and the body of the letters has this sense of being skinny on one side and thicker on the other.

The font here is Sans serif. If you look below “Chesbro,” the font used is sans serif. You can tell because the letters have a consistent thickness to them, and they don’t have any feet.

Lab 2: Typehunting ../2021/09/13/lab-2-typehunting/ ../2021/09/13/lab-2-typehunting/#respond Mon, 13 Sep 2021 05:31:28 +0000 https://comdma.com/barracoc/?p=132 The typography I found was the one used for “Hawaiian” on this shaved ice machine box. I like the choice they made with the font because the blocky shape reminds me of boards you would see on a shack. The pattern/coloring inside furthers that connection for me. The reason I’m referring to a shack is because when I was in Hawaii, I had stopped to get shaved ice on the big island, and it happened to be in a shack, so I thought it was a cool similarity. I would also like to point out how there are two flowers at the top of the i’s, almost representing the dots on a lowercase i. This, to me, is an interesting choice because all the words are uppercase, but I guess they are trying to display that the i’s are i’s, and not L’s. Overall I like the typography choice because it’s simultaneously bold but smooth with the round edges at the tops and bottoms of the letters.

Lab 1: Typehunting ../2021/09/07/lab-1-typehunting/ ../2021/09/07/lab-1-typehunting/#respond Tue, 07 Sep 2021 06:46:18 +0000 https://comdma.com/barracoc/?p=126 The first typography I found was the one used for the word “donettes” on this packaging. It not only stood out to me because of the way it’s spelled but the choice of font and use of all lowercase letters. I like the choice of font because the roundness of each letter reminds me of the shape of doughnuts, and that’s what they’re selling. They give the sense of bubble letters but overall go very well with the contrast of the typography used for the rest of the words on the bag. Along with this, since “donettes” is the only word on the bag that has very unique typography, it tends to pop out amongst the rest.

The next typography I found was on one of my perfume bottles, “Miss Dior.” I like the typography chosen for this product because it’s clean and readable. It’s very appealing because when I think of a brand like Dior, I think of fancy, prestige, or expensive, and the typography that was done for the name of the perfume gives me that impression. In general, I like fancier types of print like this perfume, and I associate typography of this nature with being fancy. Like I would see it at an expensive restaurant of some sort.

Lastly, I found typography on another food product, but this time, it was on a “mtn dew” can. Now for this one, I was very interested in it because the first thing I noticed was that towards the end of the W, the word dew looks stretched but, it happens to look the same on the box the cans came in. Along with that how the most noticeable letters are lower case, and they are the t and n in mtn and the e in dew. I like the typography because it goes well with the design of the can. It gives a more edgy look, especially with the outline around the letters. On top of that, I find it interesting that each letter is about the same size no matter if there is capitalization or not.
