This second project of the Fall ‘18 semester focuses on effective use of color schemes, which is something I have always thought about but it’s also something I have never restricted myself with. It was challenging to make use of certain colors in certain situations, but at the same time, using color schemes really helped with setting moods for the images. The best example I can give is the Desert image. Normally I’d think to give the sky a blue tone. However, the color scheme didn’t allow this and it set such a better mood for the image to use an orange toned background.
Illustrator was used in making each color scheme, but the rest of the work was done using Figma. Both programs have their pros and cons. However, I’ve fallen in love with Figma’s overall UX. I also aimed to use some, though not a ton of gestalt principles in the images. In the Urban image, similarity and proximity cause the buildings to look like they’re together in a single unit. Similarity is something that also appears in other images, considering the safety line in the Aquatic image as well as the planets in the Extraterrestrial image. The main outtake from this project is some practice effectively using restricted color schemes. In the field of web design, this is so important to practice as clients will typically restrict such factors. It’s great practice and I really enjoyed it.
As for improvement, I can absolutely work more on the images themselves. The Aquatic image was something that I couldn’t think of any ideas for, so what I came up with isn’t necessarily Aquatic. However, I focused on color schemes and it’s something that’s going to be very useful for designing websites in the future. The assignment in general was easy, and I think it’s perfect for practicing color usage. As for inspiration, I found it really cool that the DC character of the Joker uses a triadic color scheme. These concepts are used everywhere, it’s hidden and interesting.
