We created four stamps of locations around the world and included their cultural specialty and the price of the stamp. My locations were Dubai for its architecture, Milan for its fashion, Paris for its cuisine, and Rio de Janeiro for its sights.

The easiest part of this project was carrying out the Image Trace functionality for each image I used. Illustrator’s Image Trace gives the user the option to make a photograph look as if it’s been drawn or painted in black and white, up to four color options, and up to thirty colors for more vibrance.

The most challenging part of the project was choosing and placing the text to look pleasing on the stamp. Below is each stamp and the font that is used.

Dubai, Athelas Regular

Milan, Minion Std Black

Paris, Source Serif Variable

Rio, ヒラギノ角ゴ Std W8

To improve my submission, I feel that I could have varied fonts a little more. I Believe that they are all pretty solid fonts, but I used three serifed fonts and only one sans serif. I also could have incorporated more strong color schemes to each. My favorite schemed stamp is the Milan stamp.

This assignment could be improved by requesting one of each of the types of fonts we went over in class. This would increase the number of stamps to six, but it would include every class of fonts to better understand.

I will apply my knowledge of type to every project I do in the future because graphic design very often includes type. I will also never use the font Papyrus in my career.

Mr. Dunkle, thank you for an incredible semester, this class has impacted my views on how to tackle design projects in such a powerful, positive way.

Project Three: Photo Replacement ../../../2019/11/14/project-three-photo-replacement/ ../../../2019/11/14/project-three-photo-replacement/#respond Thu, 14 Nov 2019 16:51:47 +0000 https://comdma.com/destefaj/?p=13 In this project, we took common metaphors and turned them into photograph combinations of objects that wouldn’t normally go together. My metaphor was, “the world is your oyster.”

The easiest part of this project was actually constructing the project. I placed planet Earth and the moon in the shell of an oyster and added in some shadows that would make it look as if it was realistic.

The hardest part of this project was actually choosing a metaphor to start off of. Many of my choices were either too cliche or I couldn’t put both aspects of the metaphor together.

To improve my project, I could have made the oyster shell more simple. It had many ugly appendages where each side of the shell meets and on the inside of the shell.

This assignment could be improved by making two metaphors instead of one. A lot of students made metaphors with too much cartoon content, but they were still solid projects, so there should be one realistic and one cartoon project due.

To get a better grasp on the concept of image replacement, I looked back at some of my past work. This is my strong suit as a designer.

Project Two: Color ../../../2019/10/20/project-two-color/ ../../../2019/10/20/project-two-color/#respond Sun, 20 Oct 2019 21:10:12 +0000 https://comdma.com/destefaj/?p=9 In this project, we learned about the color schemes, gradients, and how they can be combined to be visually pleasing. Some color schemes we learned about were analogous, triadic, complimentary, and split-complimentary.

The easiest part of project two was choosing a color scheme for each scene we created. For example, a desert scene would be best suited with a warm based color scheme. I used an analogous scheme in my scene that included shades of red, orange and yellow. I found it simple to match each theme to a color scheme.

The hardest part of this project was constructing each scene including different gradients and proximity for scenes with depth. I found it challenging to come up with ideas for each scene.

To improve my project, I could have provided more detail to the city scene, a better color scheme to my underwater scene, and better use of opacity for proximity on my outer-space scene.

This assignment could be improved by incorporating the basics of proximity into our lab assignments for a better sense of how to use them.

I wold apply my knowledge of color to future projects by creating themes according to the main color schemes that we studied because they truly do provide the viewer with visual pleasure if the scheme is executed correctly.

To further enhance my knowledge of color, I visited coolors.co to see which colors went well together with their computer generated swatches.

Project One: Gestalt ../../../2019/09/19/project-one-gestalt/ ../../../2019/09/19/project-one-gestalt/#respond Thu, 19 Sep 2019 02:39:49 +0000 https://comdma.com/destefaj/?p=3 In our first project, we leaerned about the elements of Gestalt, a concept that uses a certain placement of shapes to produce a strong visual attraction. More specifically, some of those elements include proximity, repetition, closure, continuation, and more.

The easiest part of the project was quickly recreating the “Jack and Jill” story with simple shapes. My project includes simple primary elements with smaller, more complex details, such as the house or the mountains.

What was challenging was actually incorporating the Gestalt elements into the slides. It took some thought to include two or more elements into each piece.

My submission could have incorporated more consistent margins. Each slide has its own consistent margin, but some of them include a mountain going off of the slide, eliminating the margin.

The assignment could be improved by having the students research Gestalt more on the internet or another reference source.

I would apply my knowledge on these skills in future projects by taking the elements into consideration in order to produce a visually appealing piece of art.

To enhance my knowledge on Gestalt, I visited (https://www.verywellmind.com/gestalt-laws-of-perceptual-organization-2795835) to get a more clear-cut idea of some of the principles.
