DMA 370 Designing for Mobile Devices ../../dma370 Wed, 10 May 2023 02:07:16 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=7.0.4 Project 3, Mobile Game ../2023/05/10/project-3-mobile-game/ Wed, 10 May 2023 02:07:16 +0000 https://comdma.com/dma370/?p=11 What did you learn? From this project I learned a lot about auto layout. This makes it way easier to align things in a frame and adjust components without having to be extremely precise. I also learned about micro interactions. and how they make the user experience a lot better. And overall I just got more experienced with Figma as I learned to create those micro interactions in my app.

What was easy? The easy part of the project was designing the frames. I went for a simplistic design and overall I think it looked clean. Prototyping the game was pretty easy but tedious like always.

What was challenging? The challenging part was coming up with an idea for the project. I spent a lot of time deciding what kind of game I wanted to make with little success at first. Then once the idea hit me, it became way easier to work on. Figuring out how to add a keyboard component to the game was also a little challenging.

How could your submission be improved? I think my submission could be improved by adding a pattern or something to enhance the background instead of having a solid color. I could also work on more frames so the game goes on a bit longer.

How could the professor improve the assignment? I think the assignment was pretty good. I can’t seem to find much wrong with it. It allowed for a lot of creativity.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? I can apply my knowledge to a future assignment where UI design is present. I will be able to design frames much faster with auto layout, as well as improve users experiences with micro interactions. At a future job, the skills learned here could help a lot with productivity.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you? I got a lot of inspiration from browser games with a similar premise that I had played. That pretty much is the sole reason I made this style of game.

Project 2 Personal Website ../2023/05/09/project-2-personal-website/ Tue, 09 May 2023 23:51:12 +0000 https://comdma.com/dma370/?p=8 What did you learn? From this project, I learned a lot about coding. Before, I knew a little bit of html but that’s about it. CSS was completely new to me and I learned a lot about how it works. I learned what makes a website design good and things I should avoid when designing.

What was easy? The easy part of the project was gathering pictures and images to be used in the website. And while tedious, typing in the code was relatively easy to do.

What was challenging? The challenging part of this project was learning to use JavaScript. Another challenging part was any time there was a mistake, it was pretty difficult to try and find what the issue was. Lastly, trying to mess with the spacing and overall look of the website was challenging.

How could your submission be improved? I can improve this project by cleaning up the alignment on some of the pictures. Overall I could try and make the website more optimal for mobile as well.

How could the professor improve the assignment? I don’t know why but I had more trouble on this project than I ever have before. Maybe the directions were just hard to understand so if they were clearer I think it could’ve been easier.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? I think the knowledge of code this project taught me will make future web design projects way easier to complete. Although my knowledge of code is surface level, I think I could learn more in the future at a potential job or other opportunity.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you? During this project I got a lot of help from YouTube tutorials especially when I ran into a roadblock in the code that I didn’t know how to fix on my own. My CSS changes weren’t showing up at one point and a video helped me to see the issue.

Project 1, Mobile Music Player ../2023/05/09/project-1-mobile-music-player/ Tue, 09 May 2023 18:17:10 +0000 https://comdma.com/dma370/?p=4
  • What did you learn? In this project I learned how to design a mobile app that plays music. This was the first time I had done so this far. I learned more about design systems and how they can be way more complex than I was previously accustomed to. I got better at using components to design. Lastly I think I just gained more experience designing for mobile in general.
  • What was easy? The easy part of this project for me was envisioning what I wanted my app to look like. Once I got a few frames down it became easier to build out my app. The logo I think came out pretty good and it was pretty easy to make.
  • What was challenging? The challenging part for me was prototyping elements into the project such as a settings button and a keyboard that pulls up. The prototyping in general was pretty tedious and difficult. Lastly, I think deciding how it would stand out was pretty difficult because there isn’t that many music apps out there.
  • How could you improve your submission? I think I could improve the submission by adding more frames to it. The explore page for example has a bunch of different genres of music displayed which I could add extra frames to show the music inside those different genres. I could add other features such as a liking a song feature.
  • How could the professor improve the assignment? The professor could improve the assignment by showing how to use auto layouts and micro interactions as opposed to waiting for project 3 to do so. As those things would have helped tremendously.
  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? I can apply my knowledge to any job that has UI design in it’s criteria. I can use the skills I gained in this project in future projects involving mobile design and figma.
  • How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you? I got a lot of my inspiration form this app from Spotify and apple music as those apps are the ones I use the most. I got inspiration for the app logo when I looked up music style logos.
