Project One

For this project, I utilized basic shapes within Figma to recreate a fairy tale keeping Gestalt Theory in mind. My project was an interpretation of Jack and Jill; admittedly, I had some personal difficulties with this project, but besides that, I’d say I learned quite a lot about the usefulness of simple shapes.

Sketches

I did a few sketches: mostly attempting to get a feel for how I would carry this out. The initial sketches were simultaneously too simple and not focused enough for what the project needed; I then went onto another set of sketches. This time, they were a lot more polished and ended up far more akin to the actual result.

Initial sketches.
Second round of sketches: a lot closer to the final result.
The Project Itself

Taking on the actual project was interesting- I do think I could’ve definitely done better, though. Admittedly, I haven’t quite got the hang of Figma and plan to do better in the upcoming weeks. Besides that though, here’s the actual panels:

Zhenghui Shen’s article Robin Williams’ four basic design principles for non-designers was really helpful for this- even though its purpose was for page design, the principles (overlapping with or containing gestalt principles) are universal for design. Contrast was especially my primarily tool of choice for this assignment: and while I do think overall my panels look relatively geometric/inorganic (frame 3 definitely suffers the most from it- it became the most abstract, perhaps to a point where it’s not recognizable), I hope they’re legible in some format. Ultimately, I feel moderately satisfied, but mostly aiming to do better.

To next week’s endeavour!
