Director General Willem Kieft and Domine Everardus Bogardus die in a shipwreck

9/27/1647

After native attacks resulting from Kieft’s War cause many settlers to return to Holland the Dutch West India company loses confidence in its control of New Netherland and recalls Kieft to account for his conduct.

Everardus Bogardus, the domine of the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam, who is an adversary to Kieft and would often denounce his policies from the pulpit, accompanies him as he sets sail from New Amsterdam on August 17. The two have agreed to have their charges and countercharges heard and judged by the Classis of Amsterdam (the Dutch Reformed Church assembly for its church boards).

Both men drown when the he ship wrecks in the Bristol Channel near Whales before reaching its destination.
