Kieft War begins ../../../kiefts-war-begins/ ../../../kiefts-war-begins/#respond Mon, 10 Feb 2014 02:30:18 +0000 http://freeporthistory.com/?p=2360 c 1643 – c 1645

After a Swiss immigrant is killed by a Weckquaesgeek acquaintance over a personal matter in 1641 Director General Willem Kieft uses the lack of the Weckquaesgeek to produce a suspect as justification for attacks on Weckquaesgeek and Tappan refugee camps.

– On February 25, 1643, Dutch soldiers kill 129 Indians including women and children at Communipaw (Jersey CIty) during the Pavonia Massacre

– Fall that same year a force of 1,500 natives invades New Netherland, kills many, destroys villages and farms

– Englishman John Underhill, hired by Kieft, kills  500-700 Weckquaesgeek that winter, in retaliation

– Underhill  recruits militia on Long Island and kills about 1000 natives there and in Connecticut

– Heavy fighting continues for two years while many Dutch settlers return to Europe

– Both sides agree to a truce in August, 1645

– In 1647 Kieft is fired by the West India Company, recalled to explain his conduct and dies in a shipwreck on the return voyage

Director General Willem Kieft and Domine Everardus Bogardus die in a shipwreck ../../../director-general-willem-kieft-is-recalled-by-the-dutch-west-india-company/ ../../../director-general-willem-kieft-is-recalled-by-the-dutch-west-india-company/#respond Mon, 10 Feb 2014 02:42:09 +0000 http://freeporthistory.com/?p=2366 After native attacks resulting from Kieft’s War cause many settlers to return to Holland the Dutch West India company loses confidence in its control of New Netherland and recalls Kieft to account for his conduct.

Everardus Bogardus, the domine of the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam, who is an adversary to Kieft and would often denounce his policies from the pulpit, accompanies him as he sets sail from New Amsterdam on August 17. The two have agreed to have their charges and countercharges heard and judged by the Classis of Amsterdam (the Dutch Reformed Church assembly for its church boards).

Both men drown when the he ship wrecks in the Bristol Channel near Whales before reaching its destination.
