– On the ship Halve Maen (Half Moon)

– Hudson names the river Mauritius River, North River is commonly used

– Presently the Hudson River

Covertly, Hudson is seeking the North West Passage which would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. Rather, he makes contact with native Americans in the region and reports signs that it could be a significant source for beaver pelts which has a lucrative market in Europe.

– Block’s fourth voyage to the region

– Sent by the Van Tweenhuysen Company for beaver furs

– Block pilots the Tyger (Tijger, Tiger), Hendrick Christeansen the Fortuyn and Thijs Volckenz Mossel the Nachtegaal

Towards the end of January 1614, after Indians bring pelts daily from miles around to the southern tip of Manhattan to trade with Block, the Tyger burns just after its holds are filled and before it can re-embark to Holland. This likely occurs at the mouth of stream that empties into the North River at this location. Local Lanape help Block build shelters and provide game for his men and together they begin building a new ship.

In March, eight from Block’s crew seize the Nachtegaal.  Christeansen returns from up river in the Fortuyn just after the Nachtegaal heads out to the Atlantic. He gives chase but his crew will not fire upon upon their fellow mates and he’s forced to turn back. The Nachtegaal and it’s crew join the pirate fleets in the West Indies. After spending several months in the Caribbean they stop in Manhattan for repairs before heading to Spain. Rather they arrive in waters off Ireland, a haven for pirates, where the Nachtegaal and its crew is last accounted for.

A group of Puritan separatists, having left England for the Netherlands in 1608, although unable to escape religious persecution by the English Crown, obtain a patent from the Virginia Company of London, to settle land in at the mouth of the North River (Hudson River), for the Northern Virginia colony.

102 passengers, including the pilgrims, tradesmen and adventurers, and 30 crew disembark from Plymouth England, abandoning the enterprise’s second ship the Speedwell, after it’s leaks postpone their departure twice.

The Dutch West India Company relocate colonists to Manhattan ../../../the-dutch-west-india-company-relocate-colonists-to-manhattan/ ../../../the-dutch-west-india-company-relocate-colonists-to-manhattan/#respond Sun, 09 Feb 2014 19:06:01 +0000 http://freeporthistory.com/?p=2255 Considering a threat of attack  from other European colony powers, directors of the West India Company formulate a plan to protect the entrance to the North River (Hudson River). They move settlers from Nut Island (Governors Island)  to southern Manhattan where a citadel is laid out to and construction begins on Fort Amsterdam (present site of the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House). More settlers are relocated to the same area from Hudson Valley because of the Mohawk – Mahican War.

The fort is designated the capital of the New Netherland province during this same year
