The Dutch West India Company relocate colonists to Manhattan

1/1/1625

Considering a threat of attack  from other European colony powers, directors of the West India Company formulate a plan to protect the entrance to the North River (Hudson River). They move settlers from Nut Island (Governors Island)  to southern Manhattan where a citadel is laid out to and construction begins on Fort Amsterdam (present site of the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House). More settlers are relocated to the same area from Hudson Valley because of the Mohawk – Mahican War.

The fort is designated the capital of the New Netherland province during this same year
