For this project I decided to depict Tokyo, Japan in four unique stamps. The four aspects that I wanted to depict were sushi, the Sensoji Temple, the electronic industry that defines Tokyo, and the Olympic Games. My favorite stamp of the four would have to be the electronic industry one because of the cool vector images I was able to get off of Envato Elements. I really liked the font that I was able to pick out for the Japanese style text, it is called, “a-arigatou-gozaimasu”, I feel that it goes with the sans serif font that I chose to use called, “Swansea”. Overall, I enjoyed making all of the stamps because they allowed for me to explore Japanese culture and figure out things that I otherwise would have never figured out. The part where I faced most of my difficulty was alignment, more specifically, where to place everything so that each stamp was unique.

“You’re Sitting on a Winning Lottery” v1.0

During this project I came up with the first image above which I thought was okay but I did not really enjoy it. It is more of an abstract piece that kind of defeats the purpose of the metaphor because the guy in the frame almost looks like he has one the lottery already. It’s also a little too warm for me, it makes it seem as though the guy is happy although he hasn’t accomplished anything yet. The metaphor implies that he has the opportunity to have these riches but he has to make the right moves to obtain them. I felt like I really didn’t display that through this image.

So I came up with a new one.

“You’re Sitting on a Winning Lottery” v1.1

With this piece I wanted it to feel colder so I used a woman with pale, almost cold skin. I also made it seem like she wasn’t very happy unlike the last guy, she is keeping to herself. The dollar sign pattern on the wall is me trying to make it seem like the idea of the quote is jumping out at her, yelling at her to take advantage of her situation. I didn’t know exactly how I wanted to portray this and this is the best I could come up with while not scrapping the environment. I’m sure there are much better ways to portray the message but I’m not too bummed out with what I came up with.

Below are the Photoshop links to the projects.

Starting off in the urban city, I chose to go with a split-complementary color scheme. The brown, purple, and blue buildings meshed well together I think. The millions of different windows also make it feel as if every building is different, along with the overlapping of different colored buildings helps to add depth to the scene. There is a lot of repetition/continuation in this scene with the windows as well as some ambiguity with the buildings as they overlap and as they run off the screen.

Next, we move onto the seascape. With this one I chose to use complementary colors, I feel the blues and oranges work well together. I created depth in this scene by scaling the fish differently and adding more and more blur to the objects as they get further away. There is some repetition and scale amongst the fish as well. I made sure to change the color of the fish so they matched with the water gradient.

My third piece is the arid desert. I left this one simply since it is supposed to be a very lifeless desert. I went with a triadic color scheme by using the yellowish oranges for the sand dunes and an angular gradient of purples and cyans for the sky. The sky almost represent the northern lights, just in the wrong part of the world. There is contrast in the dunes as they overlap one another.

Finally, we look at my outer space scene. I decided to use an analogous color scheme here because space is usually very dark toned so using an analogous scheme allowed me to stick with dark blues and purples. I created a planet inspired by Saturn with its rings. I made it a gaseous planet so I could utilize the radial gradient and make it seem see through like a gas. I scaled the planet up enormously to make it really seem gigantic compared to the tiny meteor flying by. The meteor itself also has an analogous color scheme to it with the reds and yellows representing the flames its generating from moving so fast.

“There was a crooked man,” – Jack Gerow ../../../2021/09/27/there-was-a-crooked-man-jack-gerow/ ../../../2021/09/27/there-was-a-crooked-man-jack-gerow/#respond Mon, 27 Sep 2021 15:46:01 +0000 https://comdma.com/gerowj/?p=8 Continue reading “There was a crooked man,” – Jack Gerow]]> Starting off the story on slide one, I really wanted to emphasize the change in distance that the man travelled. In order to do that I decided to make the circle small as if to seem like it is far away, then it travelled the mile that the poem described and now it is close which would mean it would have to be bigger. We then move on to slide two, here I wanted to depict the stile as accurately as I could while still being very simplistic and vague. Thus, the three bars were made in its place. The sixpence was as simple as it gets, just a small circle, attracting the viewer to it as it is the odd ball out. Next comes slide three where I wanted to really emphasize the size of the man to the cat, very large and in charge, showing ownership of the cat. The cat itself was simple enough to make, just a small triangle to depict the face with even smaller eyes just to get the point across that it is indeed an animal. Next, on slide four, the cat has caught a mouse. in order to depict this I had to make the otherwise tiny cat seem very large as it dominates over the mouse it has caught. The idea for the mouse really just came from messing around with Figma. I knew I wanted to make an exaggerated tail, so I drew one out and it turned out looking like an 's' so I just went and made the rest of the body the remaining letters of 'mouse'. Throwing them all together in slide five was really just that, throwing them on the slide and seeing what worked best. I purposely left out the sixpence as it would no longer be in his possession because he bought the cat with it. Also, the mouse is now un-readable, I did this because of how tiny the mouse really should be. It's big enough to make out that it is the mouse but not big enough to have all of the detail in slide four. Finally, in slide six, I depict the tiny crooked house. Although I left the house as the size of the whole frame it does not necessarily point to it being a large house. I decided that making it smaller would have left to much blank space that would have taken away from the actually reason for the slide, the house. i left it simplistic, just a roof and a door so the viewer can tell it's a house but nothing more. ]]> ../../../2021/09/27/there-was-a-crooked-man-jack-gerow/feed/ 0
