DMA 395 Project 2 Reflection

In this project, I learned about spot illustrations and how to do them. I drew 9 food illustrations using Figma. Although the project came out decent, there are a couple of things I could have done differently. First, more details could have been added such as the pasta and mac and cheese. It was too basic. Secondly, the colors could have been more added to certain illustrations such as the burger. Lastly, I could have taken more time on the project as a whole. Overall this was a solid project.

DMA 395 Project 3 Reflection

In this project, I have hand drawn a step by step process on how to make tea. I honestly rushed this project by hand drawing instead of using Figma or another software. There are so many things I wished I did differently. First, I should have used Figma instead of hand drawing. Second, I definitely could have used some color to bring the project to life. The black and white looks bland and dead, unacceptable for a DMA course. Third, I should have taken my time with the drawings instead of rushing. Lastly, I should have added more detail to the drawings such as a hand pouring the water and sugar into the cup. Overall, I like the idea of the assignment itself, but my execution could have been a lot better.

DMA 395 Project 1 Reflection

This project I have learned how to use Photoshop and Illustrator in order to add filters and other cool effects to my photo. I also learned how to color schemes and graphic styles.

One thing I could have improved on is my color schemes. I felt as if my project was missing a lot of color that could have been implemented into the photo. Another thing I could have improved on are my filters. They were good but I felt as if I just simply settled for the ones that were convenient or the first ones I saw rather than exploring all of them.

Overall this was a good first project to start the semester. I felt as though I got the refresher I needed to use Photoshop and Illustrator as I have not used these software applications in a while. I am looking forward to more projects this semester.

1. What did you learn? I learned how to make thumbnails using Photoshop.

2. What was easy? Taking the photos and adding them to my flash drive. Blowing up the images.

3. What was challenging? Using Brackets.

4. How could your submission be improved? Put more effort into retouching the images and making sure all of the photos were visible in my portfolio instead of just half.

5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class? Add a link to Brackets as I had trouble finding the code.

6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? If I ever want to create a thumbnail or add some effects to my photos I can just use Photoshop.

DMA 217 PROJECT 2

In this project I learned how to create a splash page. I have never heard of such thing until doing this project. I found is easy finding a base color and something to match that base color for the overall design. However, it was very challenging thinking about what I wanted to create for an app. I also found it challenging getting all of the options to work when selected. A lot of times I caught mistakes such as the button going to the wrong slide or not doing anything at all. Lastly, I wanted to be able to copy and paste whatever code generated on the last slides but I was unable to do so. I could have added a few more slides and options instead of limiting each streaming service to just one code. For example, if the user selects Hulu, it only generates one code. The same goes for Neflix and Disney Plus even though none of them share the same code. I could have also added a little more variety of colors in my design.

In the future if I ever have to design something that requires more than one option on the screen, I could use knowledge that I learned in this project to do so. A student created a spelling game names Ghost. Their color design was similiar to mine and that is what inspired me to do red and white.

DMA 214 PROJECT 4

In my project I used the city of Buffalo since I was born and raised here. In this project I learned how to crop an image in Figma. It was easy setting up a grid to follow and use the rule of thirds. There really was not too many challenges and this was personally the easiest project this semester as it only took me two hours to complete. One ‘challenge’ was figuring out which colors I wanted to use. Another thing is figuring out where to put the colors on the stamp. One thing I would have improved on is blending the colors a bit more. Some of the stamps with different tiles could have been mixed better but other than that the project came out pretty solid. In the future I could apply the rules of thirds to any future assignments in future DMA classes and even real world projects. I could also blend in colors more precisely. One example that really stood out to me is from a former student named Alberto Pena. In his design, I liked how he positioned everything, from the price to the name of the city. I also like the Los Angeles stamp where he adds the lights spelling ‘Hollywood’.

DMA 214 PROJECT 3

In my project I used the metaphor ‘brainstorming’. In this project I learned, well relearned since I forgot, how to combine more than one image. It was easy finding photos that I wanted to use. However, it was very challenging making those photos appear more realistic and not just plastered onto a photoshop document. My submission could be improved by making the photos more realistic and pop out to the viewer. Another way my submission could be improved was by using Figma. I am most familiar with Figma compared to Illustrator and Photoshop, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. However, using Figma would have helped me more since I am used to Figma. Lastly, I could have used a better head to put the brain in. It looks out of place.

I can apply my knowledge to future work scenarios by being able to combine more than one image on Photoshop or Illustrator on top of the other things I mentioned above that I can improve on. In an example provided, a former student named Manny Ramirez’s background caught my attention. I really liked the way his sky looked. It was graphically detailed. Also the clock is shaped like a bird which was a great design.

DMA 214 PROJECT 2

In this project I learned how to coordinate different colors on Figma. I also learned how to use more than just the solid colors. It was easy adding the basic shapes to each slide and the solid color background. I did find it challenging when I got to the desert and figuring out how I can add more than one color to the background. That was before I was realized that I had to change the setting from ‘Solid’ to ‘Linear’. I was also stuck on what exactly I wanted to put on each frame. There were many ways I could improve on my submission but the main two were colors and detail. I could use better colors and adding more detail to each frame to give it some life rather than just look like an third grade art project. One way you can improve is making the instructions a little more clear. I looked at the examples for help to really understand the project. Looking at JonneMarie’s example from her WordPress page really inspired me. For example, I loved the way she set up her landscapes. From the background color, to the way the buildings looked, it was incredible.

DMA 217 Project 1

In this project I learned how to prototype using Figma and test my app using Maze. I have also learned how to create assets within my project. It was very easy to design each frame within my project. Initially I did find it challenging to be able to prototype and make everything work such as the buttons but was quickly able to learn. I also struggled to update Maze as I made changes to my project on Figma. I first refreshed the page but when I saw that wasn’t working I was confused. However, I noticed a ‘refresh prototype’ button on the top right side of Maze and that’s when I was able to update my project. I could have changed the background color a bit as it was too bright. I also could have added a time and date feature instead of just the task itself. There really isn’t anything you can improve on for the next assignment. Everything was perfect to me. I can apply my knowledge to future assignments by allowing users to test it first so I can receive feedback. I can also simply just think like a user would as well as a designer. There honestly was not a specific reading or video that helped me.
