Reflection on Project 1 – DMA 217 (Interaction Design)

What did I learn?
I was supposed to learn about the basics of interface design for mobile apps. I designed a barebones app layout and plotted out a web of interactions and transitions between pages. I also created components such as buttons to shorten my process when making several similar pages. The goal of this project was to introduce me to the basic principles at play in this class while acquiring some basic intuition for what makes good app design.

What was easy?
The logo design was pretty simple, it’s not iconic or anything but it works. Figuring out how to put together the webs between pages was also very intuitive but that’s more because of figma’s design than any work I produced.

What was difficult?
A lot of things. From color theory to making a functioning delete button, I was having trouble putting things together. I still don’t have a handle on how to make that component eradicate itself without just cloning a page that doesn’t have the component’s item listed. The aesthetics also leave plenty to be desired for me. Very barebones, same desaturated, deep blues with some tinges of white. Doesn’t really feel alive.

How could my submission be improved?
For starters I could have a working delete button. On the aesthetic level I need to be brave enough to use a color that isn’t some shade of blue and pick better fonts so I can actually imbue the app with some personality. I had some troubles putting this one together and my roadblocks left me unmotivated at best and demoralized at worst. The final page might be “competent” but I want my work to feel more inspired, especially if I’m going to end up getting a job involving this sort of work.

How might I apply my knowledge in future classes?
Some of the Figma features introduced to me here will likely embed themselves in my process as I grow more familiar with the program. I need to take some of my own advice and take a few aesthetic risks when I’m concerned with just making the thing work. I need to also try and push through my bouts of paralysis and chronic self-doubt when I hit a roadblock with this new things I’m learning, that goes for a lot of my classes as well. If I can push through those low points, I can prove to myself that I’m capable of making it here.
