  • What did you learn?
    • I learned a lot about getting comfortable with the rules of 3 in figma. I had never done a project like this in figma before so it was initially very new to me.
  • What was easy?
    • Thinking of images for each place represented in my stamps. I chose places from home so I had a good idea of what to look for.
  • What was challenging?
    • Layout was a bit challenging for me. I couldn’t get comfortable laying these stamps out without feeling like I had either done too much or too little.
  • How could your submission be improved?
    • I think if my layouts were a bit better it could have been improved.
  • How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?
    • Nothing, this was a great assignment to wrap up a great semester.
  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
    • Definitly looking at how I used type since the last lab, I felt as though I tried using type here and will continue using it in new ways going forward.
  • How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?
    • Just looking at other stamps new and old.

    1. What did you learn?
      • I got to really utilize my photoshop skills. I got a lot more comfortable with the mask tool for this project.
    2. What was easy?
      • Getting my idea together was easy for me. Once I knew I wanted to do the “heart of a lion” metaphor I was locked in on a sports theme with it and it came easy to me to create.
    3. What was challenging?
      • Figuring out the mask tool was a bit rough at points. I got into a cycle ad couldn’t find why some things weren’t working. Once I figured it out it went smoothly!
    4. How could your submission be improved?
      • I wish I used some sort of pattern in this project a bit. I love the way it came out and I used juxtaposition, I just wish I made it a bit more interesting as far as the background.
    5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?
      • I would love to learn this through figma in addition to photoshop.
    6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
      • Masking and using tools like that I will definitely take away from this.
    7. How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?
      • The other com/dma student blogs helped me a lot as far as inspiration for this project.

DMA 217 Project 3 blog ../2023/12/12/dma-217-project-3-blog/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 21:19:29 +0000 https://comdma.com/mcdonou8/?p=46 What did you learn? I learned a lot about AR overlay and using delays when creating apps using video. I also learned even more about prototyping and troubleshooting issues.

What was easy? Shooting the video. It was really easy as I have shot lots of videos before in the past.

What was challenging? Figuring out overlaying was a bit difficult. There were times I was switching my overlay and video and it wouldn’t work when I checked the prototype.

How could your submission be improved? I could improve my submission by adding more variety and statistics maybe.

How could I improve this for next class? The timing was a bit challenging but I would say offering more time and almost more examples in class. Not to like hold our hands through it but this was a really fun project and I wish I was able to work with the style more.

How may I apply this in future assignments? I will take my prototyping and troubleshooting knowledge into further assignments and other works.

My main inspiration was from class and then the app “Pokemon Go” which uses that kind of style.

DMA 217 Project 2 ../2023/12/06/dma-217-project-2/ Wed, 06 Dec 2023 21:28:28 +0000 https://comdma.com/mcdonou8/?p=44 What did you learn? I learned a lot about Figma and prototyping. I also learned a great deal about how to organize and nest my designs on my frame’s correctly.

What was easy? The design work was pretty easy. Once I started going on my idea things made sense and I could put the vision in my head right on the frames!

What was challenging? Figuring out how to nest my designs correctly was challenging. Also just finishing the project was a challenge at some points.

How could your submission be improved? I think I could use different colors to improve my submission. I love the color style but now when I see it it is almost very Halloween type designed.

How could I improve this assignment for next class? I would say maybe offer more time for it, it was a pretty stressful assignment. There are a lot of layers to it that one doesn’t think of when just glancing at it.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments? Definitly the figma prototyping I will apply. The level of prototyping needed for this assignment forced me to get really comfortable with figma as a whole.

Influence? I looked a lot at carplay which I have in my own car and use everyday!

  • What did you learn? I learned how to create a proper app from start to finish. Going from rough sketches to wireframes and inevitably to a fully functional app. I enhanced my figma skills and became well-versed in navigating this tool.
  • What was easy? The easiest thing was creating my designs. I had a good idea of what I wanted my app to look like and Figma made it easy to make those ideas a reality.
  • What was challenging? The prototype portion was initially very difficult for me to navigate. After a lot of trial and error, I was able to get the hang of it by the end.
  • How could your submission be improved? My submission could be improved if I had more substance. I think if I could successfully integrate a menu system my submission would be great.
  • How could I improve the assignment for the next class? I would say maybe offer more peer review. That was one piece that really helped me finish the project that I wish I had a little more exposure to earlier on.
  • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? I know know how to create a to do app! A lot of the tools I learned from this project will definitely help me in future projects whether it be more apps or even websites.
  • How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you? Refer to a specific reading or link for this; do not reference a class video or lecture. I took a lot of influence from google tasks and an app I use on my own called “anylist”. These two being established to do apps I took a lot of influence from their efficient design.

  • I learned how to use aftereffects!
  • Using premiere pro was easy because of my prior experience.
  • Using aftereffects was challenging initially.
  • I feel like my camera quality could have been better.
  • Maybe not limit us to just the music we create. I felt a little handcuffed with my options.
  • I want to go into video so this will help me a lot in the future.
  • I worked on a short film with a Canisius grad earlier in the fall and that experience helped me a lot.

  • I learned a lot about using unity in this project. I have never done anything in the game design field so it was very interesting for me.
  • The easiest thing was probably the terrain alterations. It was very enjoyable to see how intuitive the program was!
  • The most challenging thing was navigating unity as a whole. With the license issues and saving things, there were a couple of times I feared losing my entire project.
  • My submission could be a little bit clean with the terrain alterations. Sometimes I got a little too happy almost and just did too many random alterations.
  • Maybe just have more clean-cut methods for navigating unity.
  • I think I could take some things I learned about how important file management and understanding are.
  • I thought a lot about golf games I had played online in the past since the terrain alteration reminded me of a golf course!

    Project 2 ../2022/10/26/project-2/ Wed, 26 Oct 2022 22:45:34 +0000 https://comdma.com/mcdonou8/?p=22 https://www.figma.com/file/0F80E0wJOLKnv2zQMtEkbs/Shane-McDonough-Website?node-id=0%3A1

I greatly enjoyed this project on web design. I learned a lot about using figma and had a great time using this service. Mainly using the prototype tool to add hyperlinks and make it so my pages can be reached through my header. That was a lot of fun figuring out and learning how to do that. This project was pretty easy for me as a whole, just because I had done 2 projects like this in high school. Those projects gave me a good fundamental understanding of this project but I still learned a lot. The most challenging thing was formatting my images in some scenarios and then just picking my color scheme. I wanted my colors to work well with each other and for my images to make sense. I think the one thing I would change about my submission would just be my logo from lab 3. I wish it looked cleaner and would relate more to my website as a whole stylistically. The professor could improve just by adding more class time for this project for questions. There were a few classes where I would’ve appreciated even just a 10-minute period of time to just ask some formatting questions. Websites are a great tool so I think I will be using the skills learned in this project for years to come. Whether it is making websites for work or just trying to create my portfolio through this. I read an article posted by HubSpot(Linked below) for some inspiration and a guide for my homepage. I have experience using HubSpot for SEO work so I clicked on this link since I know somewhat about the organization.

I also had to learn how to work on the fly since I lost my first draft completely. I was able to turn it around though and make an even better product to finish!

    WIP
    WIP
    1. I learned a lot about masking and how to use the ruler lines to help me create the barriers in my work space.
    2. This project was pretty easy with my past digital graphics experiences(2 years of digital graphics courses).
    3. The most challenging thing I faced was losing my entire first draft. I adapted well and came up with an even better project despite that challenge!
    4. I think my submission could be improved by picking 2 leprechauns that look more identical. There are subtle differences that could pose potential problems to consumers.
    5. Maybe go slower through some of the steps, some that I wanted more clarity on felt a little rushed at points.
    6. Masking is a tool I will use in further assignments as it is very useful. But working under pressure like I had to do this time around will definitely help in future work.
    7. I looked at the 7 beginner mistakes blog to make sure I did not make the mentioned mistakes!
