  • What did you learn?
  • I learned about how important spacing is in projects. One thing is out of place can drastically change how your project looks.

    • What was easy?

Following the color schemes provided by Coolors was easy. I found this plugin to be very helpful in this project.

    • What was challenging?

Texture, spacing, and layout design, all these things seem fairly easy to understand, however, I had a hard time trying to add all these elements to this project. It took me a while to think about how I wanted my stamps to look, and I had a hard time executing the ideas I had.

    • How could your submission be improved?

I think I put too much thought into it. That doesn’t necessarily seem like a bad thing, however, I think overthinking made the process harder than it should have been.

    • How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?

I really liked the creative freedom in this project. Being able to choose your own location was a really good touch. I wouldn’t suggest changing anything.

    • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

I can use my knowledge of spacing in future assignments. Spacing and layout design is important in any project you do.

Project 4: Typography ../2022/12/02/project-4-typography/ Fri, 02 Dec 2022 05:33:38 +0000 https://comdma.com/oliviacr/?p=31 I learned how positioning and placement can change how the audience reacts to something you create. The fonts you use, and the colors you use, all play into how the audience may view your piece.

Even though the main goal of this project was simply to fit words together, I found it to be challenging. I was constantly thinking about the different ways that the words could be placed together. Was there something that I was missing, what if this word looks better vertical, or horizontal? I was consistently rearranging the words to see if they looked better a certain way.

I think my submission could be improved by using up more of the frame. Looking back at my frames now, I notice a lot of white space.

Allowing the students to add color and shapes, may add a different challenge to the project.

Spacing is one of the most important things I have learned from this project. The rule of thirds is something I will definitely use in future projects.

Our ‘Type in Design‘ slideshow was the most helpful for me during this project. Contrast was the most interesting topic for me, I like how adding something unexpected can change the direction of the project.

  • While working on this project, I found that writing your ideas down on a piece of paper really helps with your creative process. Before I used to brainstorm without writing anything down, and this caused a lot of confusion about how I wanted the final result to look. Now, I can look back and have a clear idea about what I want my project to look like.
  • The easiest part of this project was using the plugins in Figma. By using the plugins, I was able to find exactly what I was looking for. Before, I would have to search the internet for non-copyrighted images, but with the plugins, you have access to an unlimited amount of images.
  • The most challenging part of this project was masking. I had only ever masked with Photoshop before, so learning a different method was challenging.
  • My submission could be improved with scale and skew. I had a difficult time positioning the necklace to make it look like the woman was already wearing it.
  • For the next class, this project could be improved by allowing the students to choose their own backgrounds. I found it difficult to try and incorporate the background I made in iconify with the images I combined.
  • In the future, I can use my new knowledge of writing down my ideas instead of making a mental note of them. Although very simple, having your ideas on a piece of paper can drastically change how your project ends up.
  • James Geary’s Metaphorically Speaking Ted Talk was very helpful in understanding metaphors and how we react to them. I found the Stroop test and cognitive dissonance to be the most interesting. https://www.ted.com/talks/james_geary_metaphorically_speaking

    Project 2:Color ../2022/10/14/project-2color/ Fri, 14 Oct 2022 04:10:21 +0000 https://comdma.com/oliviacr/?p=17
  • I learned a lot about color and color schemes during this project. I learned about complimentary colors, triadic colors, analogous colors, etc… After learning about all of these different schemes, I found my favorite was monochromatic. One big takeaway from this project is using color schemes to enhance any future projects.
  • I like experimenting with colors and how they can complement each other within my daily life, for example wearing a monochromatic outfit. I found that creating color schemes and finding colors that work well with each other were my favorite parts of the project, as well as the easiest.
  • Trying to navigate new effects in Figma was challenging. Sometimes, when trying a new effect, it wouldn’t work in the way I wanted it to, so I had continuously retry. Throughout the project I found myself being able to navigate these new effects better than I had when I first tried.
  • My submission could be improved by adding more depth to some of my scenes. As mentioned before I had a difficult time with the new effects, and as a result, I wasn’t able to create exactly what I had in mind. With time and practice, my skills with Figma can be improved.
  • For future classes, this project can be improved by requiring certain elements to be put into each scene. For example, for the desert, there have to be three cacti or there has to be a sun in the background. By requiring certain elements into the scenes, not only will the student’s experience in color schemes increase but also their ability to use Figma.
  • As mentioned before I already apply color schemes to my daily life, however, I did not know about all the color schemes taught. With my new knowledge of these schemes, I can use them to improve future projects in school and work and in my outfits!
  • One video that helped me the most, was the video about the city/desert scene posted on the google drive. It helped me understand how to use the pencil tool to add dimension to a project.dma214 project2 desert and city figma.mp4

    Project 1 ../2022/09/20/project-1/ Tue, 20 Sep 2022 20:35:28 +0000 https://comdma.com/oliviacr/?p=7 Blog #1

    1. I learned a lot from this project. The first being that are many different ways that you can portray a single subject. For example, the spider in my story is portrayed as both a circle and a pentagon. The second thing I have learned was the rule of thirds. With the use of the rule of thirds, you are able to space out things to create a focal point.
    1. For me, the easiest part of this project was being able to use the different gestalt principles. I liked being able to take the principle and turn it into a story that can be told through shapes.
    1. The most challenging part of this project was being able to create a focal point while also keeping the theme. Sometimes, an idea I had for a frame either did not align with a principle or I wasn’t able to create a focal point that fits with both the story and principle.
    1. One way my submission could have been improved is by simplifying my frames. In order to keep up with the story and principles, I often added additional shapes to my frames to ensure that both concepts were present.
    1. One way this project could be improved is by assigning each frame with a principle. For example, frame one would have to follow the proximity principle, frame two would have to follow the continuity principle, and so on.
    1. I can take my knowledge of the rule of thirds with me to my next project. By understanding spacing, I am able to create a more coherent design.
    1. This article by Smashing Magazine provided great examples and definitions of the different gestalt principles. I was able to use this article to help create my ideas for my frames. https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2014/03/design-principles-visual-perception-and-the-principles-of-gestalt/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A%20SmashingMagazine%20%28Smashing%20Magazine%29
