  • What did you learn?
  • In this project, I played with realism in a way I never really had before. I wanted to make my logos for the cans look like they could really be there. Messing with the image and trying to make them all look they were part of the same brand.

    • What was easy?

Coming up with the concept and picking the colors and alliteration to go along with it. The original sketch ideas came pretty easy as well.

    • What was challenging?

Drawing and using a lot more shading in my art then I’m used to.

    • How could your submission be improved?

Adding more color variety, especially for Heracles Harlequin. Could’ve added more highlights in general. I’m always scared to add to many highlights and I need to stop that

    • How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

Greek Mythology is the inspiration and the designs mostly come from already existing myths

    Project 2 – Poster ../2020/10/20/project-2-poster/ ../2020/10/20/project-2-poster/#respond Tue, 20 Oct 2020 15:19:23 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=149
  • What did you learn?
  • Working in Illustrator, I was able to learn new ways to manipulate text as well as use clipping masking efficiently with patterns.

    • What was easy?

Coming up with the color scheme as well as a general idea of how I wanted the poster to look.

    • What was challenging?

Personally, trying to figure out why the clipping mask wasn’t working as well as finding a type of type that I wanted to use. Once I was able to figure out clipping mask, it was fine. Though I don’t know if I’m completely happy with how the text came out

    • How could your submission be improved?

playing with the pattern more would probably make the background look better.

    • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

Increasing my knowledge of illustrator, and adobe, can help any projects I do in the future.

    • How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

The mini series over the garden wall was the inspiration for the whole project. The color schemes of the show and autumn in general helped decide how I was going do this project.

    Project 1 – DMA 395 ../2020/09/24/project-1-dma-395/ ../2020/09/24/project-1-dma-395/#respond Thu, 24 Sep 2020 14:37:49 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=143 What did you learn?

I was able to learn more about the structure of Illustrator as well as how to change images from realistic to something that looks more like drawings.

    What was easy?

Working with Procreate for my one image was easy since I already knew the program. I also knew how I wanted to edit the images right away, with a comic book style.

    What was challenging?

I had a lot of difficulty trying to get Illustrator to do what I wanted, especially with the hair. I still don’t think it looks as good as I want. Also, picking the colors for illustrator and even procreate was challenging since I didn’t want to have too many colors in the image.

How could your submission be improved?

I think I could play with the backgrounds more for both, and play with the colors in the hair for the illustrator more. For Illustrator too, go into the demon, creepy feel more.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

Knowing how to do this in photoshop, procreate, and Illustrator can help any project I might do in the future based on an existing image.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

The style for the art is very comic book shading.

    • What was challenging?

I had a lot of difficulty using the mixer tool.

    • How could your submission be improved?

With practice and a better understanding of how these tools than I can improve the overall quality of the lab.

    • How could I improve the assignment for the next class?

Playing with the tools, like mixer, and settings to try and find what works better for me.

    • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

Knowing how to color and mix in photoshop can help with any project and help with better understand how to make in photoshop.

Project 4 – Map Infographics ../2020/05/11/project-4-map-infographics/ ../2020/05/11/project-4-map-infographics/#respond Mon, 11 May 2020 22:40:15 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=126 For this project we created maps in illustrator for certain locations. I did Pioneer Camp & Retreat Center which I worked as a camp counselor for 2 years and went as a camper for over 10. The place is closing in 2021 so I figured doing it for my map would be a fun way to cope. I learned how to manipulate shapes, like the circle, and warp them, like the banner. Switching to different layers was difficult and I often ended up putting objects of layers I didn’t intend to. I think I would’ve like to make the map more abstract rather than as accurate as it is and make all the objects facing one way with shaping. However I decided the best way to fit all the objects is to put them exactly where they are. Making larger projects like this is a good skill to know when it comes to illustrator and I feel doing this project has helped me prepare for bigger things in the future.

Project 3 – Package Design ../2020/05/11/project-3-package-design/ ../2020/05/11/project-3-package-design/#respond Mon, 11 May 2020 22:31:50 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=124 We designed a package for Elmhurt. In the design I tried using earthy tones since the product is heavily based in that. I learned how to affect the text of on a line as well as create individual sections for color. Deciding how to formate the colors with the cup and apple into the design was difficult for me. I think if I was able to make certain sections white to show up over the cup I think it would look better overall. Being able to use vector, work with individual sections, and turn text to vector can help any illustrator project in the future.

    Lab 5 – Pen Tool ../2020/02/21/lab-5-pen-tool/ ../2020/02/21/lab-5-pen-tool/#respond Fri, 21 Feb 2020 00:16:14 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=115

What did you learn? I’ve never really used the pen tool, generally try to avoid it since I was never really taught how to use it. Working with it here helped me understand the tool better than before.

What was easy? I think some of the stencils were easier than others, like the first, second, and third.

What was challenging? The last two stencils were difficult until I figured out what I needed to do.

How could your submission be improved? by making the lines more on the stencils.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? I now have a better understanding of the pen tool which can help when working in illustrator in the future.

    Project 1 – Portfolio ../2020/02/13/project-1-portfolio/ ../2020/02/13/project-1-portfolio/#respond Thu, 13 Feb 2020 22:51:01 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=76

What did you learn? I learned color contrast and fixing the photo to look better, but still realistic.

What was easy? Knowing what colors I wanted to edit was easy. The photos without background noise were easier than ones I had to edit out things.

What was challenging? editing out certain things as well as getting the colors right without it looking unrealistic.

How could your submission be improved? I think if I had the skills to edit everything out of the backgrounds I’d need to. Or if animals sat still long enough for me to completely control the photo.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? Not only does being able to manipulate the colors in photos help with control in other projects, but doing this project helped me think about the position of the photos and perspective which can increase the overall quality of the piece.

How did a specific reading, video or others’ work inspire or help you? my wonderfully cute pets

    Lab 3 Composite Images ../2020/02/06/lab-3-composite-images/ ../2020/02/06/lab-3-composite-images/#respond Thu, 06 Feb 2020 22:27:42 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=68

what did you learn? I learned how to use, specifically, the lasso tool. Every time I’ve used photoshop and needed to cut something out, I’ve used the magnate or magic wand tool. I was interesting learning different techniques to get similar effect

What was easy? Using the tools I’ve used before, but also following along to learn how to use the tools I wasn’t familiar with.

What was challenging? The tool used on the woman was really hard to get right. I had to constantly change the color so it wouldn’t go into her hair or her outfit. Part of me would rather trust my eyes than that tool though I do see it’s uses.

How could your submission be improved? Being more precise on the objects, specifically the woman.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? Knowing the different techniques will help later hat working in photoshop to know which technique will work best for each situation.
