  • What did you learn?
  • In this project, I played with realism in a way I never really had before. I wanted to make my logos for the cans look like they could really be there. Messing with the image and trying to make them all look they were part of the same brand.

    • What was easy?

Coming up with the concept and picking the colors and alliteration to go along with it. The original sketch ideas came pretty easy as well.

    • What was challenging?

Drawing and using a lot more shading in my art then I’m used to.

    • How could your submission be improved?

Adding more color variety, especially for Heracles Harlequin. Could’ve added more highlights in general. I’m always scared to add to many highlights and I need to stop that

    • How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

Greek Mythology is the inspiration and the designs mostly come from already existing myths

    Project 2 – Poster ../../../2020/10/20/project-2-poster/ ../../../2020/10/20/project-2-poster/#respond Tue, 20 Oct 2020 15:19:23 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=149
  • What did you learn?
  • Working in Illustrator, I was able to learn new ways to manipulate text as well as use clipping masking efficiently with patterns.

    • What was easy?

Coming up with the color scheme as well as a general idea of how I wanted the poster to look.

    • What was challenging?

Personally, trying to figure out why the clipping mask wasn’t working as well as finding a type of type that I wanted to use. Once I was able to figure out clipping mask, it was fine. Though I don’t know if I’m completely happy with how the text came out

    • How could your submission be improved?

playing with the pattern more would probably make the background look better.

    • How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

Increasing my knowledge of illustrator, and adobe, can help any projects I do in the future.

    • How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

The mini series over the garden wall was the inspiration for the whole project. The color schemes of the show and autumn in general helped decide how I was going do this project.

    Project 1 – DMA 395 ../../../2020/09/24/project-1-dma-395/ ../../../2020/09/24/project-1-dma-395/#respond Thu, 24 Sep 2020 14:37:49 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=143 What did you learn?

I was able to learn more about the structure of Illustrator as well as how to change images from realistic to something that looks more like drawings.

    What was easy?

Working with Procreate for my one image was easy since I already knew the program. I also knew how I wanted to edit the images right away, with a comic book style.

    What was challenging?

I had a lot of difficulty trying to get Illustrator to do what I wanted, especially with the hair. I still don’t think it looks as good as I want. Also, picking the colors for illustrator and even procreate was challenging since I didn’t want to have too many colors in the image.

How could your submission be improved?

I think I could play with the backgrounds more for both, and play with the colors in the hair for the illustrator more. For Illustrator too, go into the demon, creepy feel more.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

Knowing how to do this in photoshop, procreate, and Illustrator can help any project I might do in the future based on an existing image.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

The style for the art is very comic book shading.

Project 4 – Map Infographics ../../../2020/05/11/project-4-map-infographics/ ../../../2020/05/11/project-4-map-infographics/#respond Mon, 11 May 2020 22:40:15 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=126 For this project we created maps in illustrator for certain locations. I did Pioneer Camp & Retreat Center which I worked as a camp counselor for 2 years and went as a camper for over 10. The place is closing in 2021 so I figured doing it for my map would be a fun way to cope. I learned how to manipulate shapes, like the circle, and warp them, like the banner. Switching to different layers was difficult and I often ended up putting objects of layers I didn’t intend to. I think I would’ve like to make the map more abstract rather than as accurate as it is and make all the objects facing one way with shaping. However I decided the best way to fit all the objects is to put them exactly where they are. Making larger projects like this is a good skill to know when it comes to illustrator and I feel doing this project has helped me prepare for bigger things in the future.

    Project 1 – Portfolio ../../../2020/02/13/project-1-portfolio/ ../../../2020/02/13/project-1-portfolio/#respond Thu, 13 Feb 2020 22:51:01 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=76

What did you learn? I learned color contrast and fixing the photo to look better, but still realistic.

What was easy? Knowing what colors I wanted to edit was easy. The photos without background noise were easier than ones I had to edit out things.

What was challenging? editing out certain things as well as getting the colors right without it looking unrealistic.

How could your submission be improved? I think if I had the skills to edit everything out of the backgrounds I’d need to. Or if animals sat still long enough for me to completely control the photo.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? Not only does being able to manipulate the colors in photos help with control in other projects, but doing this project helped me think about the position of the photos and perspective which can increase the overall quality of the piece.

How did a specific reading, video or others’ work inspire or help you? my wonderfully cute pets

214 – Project 4 ../../../2019/12/05/214-project-4/ ../../../2019/12/05/214-project-4/#respond Thu, 05 Dec 2019 18:53:13 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=34 For this project we used text and color schemes to create stamps for a specific location.

I did Ancient Greece because I thought I could have fun working with this myths and creating what maybe what we would have seen at the time if they had stamps. I was inspired to do this because of my obsession with classics and a recent podcast I’ve been listening to.

I learned typography tactics which were really fun to learn and how to fit the letters in a way that were aesthetically pleasing. Also, working with the previous color knowledge to make the stamp look good rather than an eye sour.

It was challenging sometimes to see spacing problems in the letters or try to find the best way to make it look even. However, I think it was do to my inexperience with changing type and it was easier to find problems the longer I worked on the project, though I’m sure I still missed some things.

Coming up with the original idea as easy as well as deciding what colors I want for each the different stamps.

The third stamp, the Gods, I feel could definite be improved. It loos overall more cartoony in a bad way, but I like the lightning bolt across the middle and like the overall design. I’m not sure how to fix it, but it could use work.

typography itself is really useful skill to have and I really enjoyed doing it. creating posters, working on art, or promotional material could use this kind of knowledge and I would love to do things like that.

Project 3 – Metaphors ../../../2019/11/12/project-3-metaphors/ ../../../2019/11/12/project-3-metaphors/#respond Tue, 12 Nov 2019 18:59:40 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=30 In this project we worked in Photoshop and Illustrator to create a visual metaphor. I did “Love grows like a rose” and tried to visualize that by having a heart growing out of a flower stem.

It was easy coming up with the idea as well as working in Photoshop with masking the images and combining them. However, there were things I wanted to add to the project that I couldn’t figure how to do because of my lack of experience in the program. Such as creating shadow gradient on the heart to make it look more realistic..

I took a while for me to understand the pattern creation, but after I got it it was fun creating the pattern and figuring out how I wanted it to look.

adding shading and lighting to the rose and hand I think would make it stand out more with the background and make it look more realistic.

I changed the project from “Love is Blind” and though I liked the image, I do like the creepy imagery of the heart as well.

Next time I liked to be able to make the shading, but being able to combine images in photoshop makes working in the program in the future a lot easier.

I made up the new phrase for the image based on things said in class, but as the old saying of love is blind.

Project 2 ../../../2019/10/17/project-2/ ../../../2019/10/17/project-2/#respond Thu, 17 Oct 2019 18:23:05 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=22 We worked in Illustrator to create four scenes using different color schemes. we made a desert scene, space, underwater, and skyline city.

For the desert scene I did analogous color scheme. Doing this scene I learned how to do opacity control for the shadow of the sand dunes. Doing the gradient was annoying until I got the hang of using it, then it got easy and fun to do. it instantly added depth to the 2D image.

the underwater scene is the one I’m least proud of. I feel if I went to change it I wouldn’t know what to add, but it needs something to make it stand out more. the color scheme is complimentary with the one orange fish among the blue background and other in shadow fish.

For space I did triadic color scheme. The most challenging thing about this project was having a vision of what I wanted all the scenes to look like, but not knowing how to execute them. I need more practice in the program

For the city I did monochromatic. I learned how to create multiple windows using the blend tool. I could improve all the scenes by adding more depth, especially for the city and underwater.

For future projects working in illustrator I know how to implement some of the things I learned to make better scenes that look more professional.

Project 1: DMA 214 ../../../2019/09/19/project-1-dma-214/ ../../../2019/09/19/project-1-dma-214/#respond Thu, 19 Sep 2019 17:12:56 +0000 https://comdma.com/rice16/?p=15 In this project we worked in Illustrator and Figma to create black and white simple shaped telling of nursery rhymes. I haven’t worked with either program a lot so I learned about how to really use the programs.

it was easy for me to visualize how I wanted my project to look, however putting it together was the more difficult part of the project. Since I haven’t worked in the program, making the panels looking exactly how I wanted was a challenge. I wasn’t sure how to do certain things, like colors changing while overlapping images or changing stroke size.

using stroke sizes I was able to make the star spread out and look like they were overlapping each other without the sizes and angles being different
overlapping the images I could create a color contrast

Even though I enjoy the overall simplicity of my project, I like the more complex designs over people in my class came up with. I think my project would be improved with a more abstract design.

It’s the story of Little Miss Muffet through the perspective of the spider. I thought the story would work better with him as the main character and I was inspired by how in everyday life people are so scared of spiders, including myself, that the thought of that must make them sad.

For future assignments I know the basics of Illustrator and Figma that I can apply. As well as being able to bring in the rule of threes and the grid system to make my designs better and less generic.
