Poster project ../2023/11/07/poster-project/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 03:56:07 +0000 https://comdma.com/roycebreslawski/?p=60 Continue reading Poster project]]> I chose to work with 1960s psychedelic fonts. One of the pioneers of this scene was graphic designer Wes Wilson, who created many posters for bands and groups at the fore front of the west coast counterculture movement of the 60s and 70s. I used Wes Wilsons own font, sometimes called psychedelia, that was his trademark font throughout his poster series. It is a very “swooshy” font that is intentionally made this way, so it is easier to bend and wrap around other words. I noticed that frequently more traditional serif fonts were also used in these posters, to highlight more important details that may be more difficult to make out in the overstimulated hippie-esque fonts that made up most of the poster surface. So, I also incorporated Arial around the edges to fuse the two font groups and create a more dynamic poster layout. It was difficult to fit all the requirements for the project into just one poster, so I made 3. The first two are posters in the style of Wes Wilson for musical artists that I like, and the third is a more general informative poster for the font and design style as a whole.

A new design program always gets me exited. It was easy to figure out the interface design aspects and I greatly enjoyed this part of the design process. I did initially struggle with prototyping, creating components and variables and such because it was something band new to me, and I think some of the animations are defiantly where this project falls behind. But the general function is complete, and it is a very simple and straightforward app. I am happy with the name, color palette, and the baseline knowledge I picked up while completing this project. I think Figma is a much better program for app designing than illustrator, it is just so much more streamlined and less complicated. The simple interface makes it easy to use for beginners, while still leaving lots of hidden functions to experiment with for more experienced users.

Matches are created by pairing compatible astronomical signs. This is a popular belief and hobby among younger people. I was finally able to figure out and make components with smart animations. I am happy with the colors, fonts, and design of the app. If I could improve anything It would be to polish over the chat function, I could’ve added some more component to bring some sparkle. I used my roommate as the match because I thought it was funny, however perhaps a less goofy photo would’ve been better.

Project 4 – stamps ../2021/12/13/project-4-stamps/ ../2021/12/13/project-4-stamps/#respond Mon, 13 Dec 2021 02:13:18 +0000 https://comdma.com/roycebreslawski/?p=36 Continue reading Project 4 – stamps]]> I took a slightly unorthodox approach to this project, instead of a city I chose my favorite musical artist, Kanye West, and made the stamps based off the aesthetic and color scheme of his albums/discography .

Starting with the top right, these represent Kanyes two debut albums College dropout and Late registration. The color palette is a warm analogous with shades of red, yellow and orange, to match the album covers. I included the coordinates of Chicago, Kanye’s hometown, as well as his birth year. Moving on to the top right, this contrasted red and green color scheme has the same palette as Ye’s groundbreaking album “my beautiful dark twisted fantasy” as well as the iconic “808s and heartbreaks” broken heart image. I tried to align the images into a congruent pattern. The bottom left represents Kanye’s newest releases, The life of Pablo and Donda. The orange tint and Helvetica font are directly taken from these respective colors. And finally, the bottom left stamp has Kanye’s signature glasses from his “Graduation” era. I like the grunge pattern and vibrant reflective color scheme. I feel the weakest stamp is probably the top left, there isn’t really a clear focus point and the tones are kind of muddled and boring. This was a fun project and paired up well with the type Tetris lab as well as Figma knowledge as a whole.

At first I wasn’t sure what rhyme to go with , I just started doing random shapes until something came to mind.A bridge falling apart formed, so I decided to do London bridge is falling down, a familiar nursery rhymes to most children. there are some dark undertones to this rhyme, and I tried to incorporate those elements into the Gestalt panels. The first three panels show the bridges destruction into the deadly raging river. The next three show the bridges rebuilding. I tried to maximize the use of negative space in order to tell a story, with a black background representing death and the river with a white background meaning land and safety. The transition from chaos to order , represented by the scales is done with the Gestalt principles primarily contrast color. This was my first real Figma project, and it was a great way to get familiar with a new program. If I could improve something, it would be the composition of the first square, it was really just a testing ground to get the ball rolling, so I think it looks a bit “off” compared to the rest.

Although I’m not as good with figma as the adobe programs, this was a fun project and visually/aesthetically pleasing to make color scheme landscapes. I spent a-lot of time on the seascape, watching youtube videos on how to make realistic leaves, and some of my other landscapes suffered less attention as a result. The gradients of the desert are probably my favorite, but I needed to add more details in the background. Same goes for the city, I didn’t want to overload the windows so I just sporadically placed them around the buildings. This randomness is a bit messy. I think the colors overall work well together and sell the mood and tone of each respective image.

“Heart of Gold”

I initially struggled with settling on an idea for this project. After a few rough drafts and suggestions from classmates I settled on the heart of gold metaphor. This at first started as heart with veins of gold in it, but after some peer review I morphed it into more of a crystal cavern type of thing. I think this really sells the idea of it being a mine, with a core of gold at the center. If there is one thing I would improve on this, it would be the background. I didn’t want it to distract from the foreground main heart image, so I settled on a pattern of gem symbols. I wish I could’ve fleshed it out a little more, or perhaps just put in a gradient or something. The color scheme was just a little difficult to figure out without being too distracting. Overall, I really enjoyed this project as I make projects in photoshop frequently so it was good to flex those muscles after a couple months of mainly using Figma and after effects in my other DMA classes. I finished this very quickly as well and it allowed me to make several different drafts with other metaphors.
